The Oxford Independent Authors are a mutually supportive group of writers who meet to share expertise, preserving independence and joining together at collaborative events. The focus of this group is on marketing, promoting, selling and raising the profile of our writers.

Father and daughter have written plays, film scripts, and books together, including memoirs documenting Ray Foulk’s life as creator of the original Isle of Wight Rock Festivals: Stealing Dylan from Woodstock and The Last Great Event. They have recently published their long-awaited novel, Picasso’s Revenge, and Caroline has published her illustrated collection of humorous canine poetry.

Sylvia named Coopers Oxford Marmalade Factory, ‘the Jam Factory’ when she established an Art and Antiques Centre with café, bookshop and repair services. The name has stuck! She’s best known locally for the ten year Oxford Castaway series in The Oxford Times. It brought together people who would usually never meet and she made it diverse which was rare then. Her novel, Sculpting the Elephant, is half set in Jericho and half in India. Sylvia is a campaigner for libraries and recently, with friends and the help of Korky Paul raised the money to build the first community library in west Kenya where her novel Not so Black and White is partly set. Her best-selling Brushstrokes in Time is a historical novel which tells the story of the courageous Stars artists (Beijing 1979). Her memoir has been endorsed by the journalist, Yasmin Alibhai Brown, the international poet Sudeep Sen and the history professor, Rana Mitter (Oxford and Harvard).

Mario Coelho is a award wining children’s book illustrator based in Oxford with several mainstream picture book publications including with the prestigious Oxford University Press and several independent publications with the very well known and acclaimed children’s poet John foster.

Very recently I have worked alongside the great illustrator Korky Paul for a publishing project with Epic Tales where we both illustrated several titles.

Marian Eastwood is the founder of the Oxford Poetry Circle in Oxford, UK and hosts monthly poetry and open mic events with featured poets.

Her debut poetry collection. Secret Codes was published last June 2025.

She served as a Labour Attaché for the Philippine Mission to the United Nations and other International Orgsnisations for seven years in Geneva, Switzerland after being the Welfare Officer for the Philippine Consulate in Milan Italy.

She founded the Boracay Paraw Regatta and International Arts Festival and managed it for seven years from 1992-1998, on Boracay Island in the Philippines.

Kiera has always been fascinated by the ways words can be used to twist insanity into perfect sense, and thought she better take some responsibility and twist some of it back again.

Results Department Editorial Services is run by Helen Johns, an award-winning copywriter and supplier of editorial services in Oxfordshire. Helen specialises in providing editorial support, copywriting, copy editing and proofreading services to authors and businesses. Her background is based on 40 years’ experience of editorial, sales and marketing roles in book and magazine publishing and other businesses.

Helen can edit your book for publication, whether it’s fiction, biography or memoir, or non-fiction. I’ll check for consistency, clarity, and relevance; ensure grammar, syntax, diction, spelling and punctuation are correct; reduce over-long sentences where required; double-check that text references and footnotes are accurate; remove unwanted formatting, and check fonts are consistent.

Helen is also a first-class proofreader: checking for spelling and punctuation errors in headings and body copy; reviewing consistency of headings, references and pagination; ensuring fonts are consistent; dealing with missing or repeated text; and ensuring captions and source references are correct.

Angela has written extensively for the Oxford University Press Reading Tree Programme (mostly for the award-winning Readerful series). She has recently written two Stories for Maths titles. Scareground, her middle-grade novel was published in 2023 and nominated for the Historical Association’s Young Quills Award (Best Historical Fiction for Children). Angela teaches creative writing worldwide to children and adults, and will reopen her booking list in September. Hobbledown, the award-winning adventure park, is based on her children’s book of the same title.

Josie Jaffrey is an Oxford-based indie author who writes about lost worlds, dystopian societies and morally-ambiguous monsters (vampires are her favourite). She has published multiple novels and short stories. Most of those are set in the Silverse, an apocalyptic world filled with vampires and zombies.

Josie is the founding editor of indie fantasy magazine Indie Bites and the writer of the urban fantasy podcast Jack Valentine, Vampire Detective.​

I have been a writer of fiction for many years, initially as a short story writer for women’s magazines when I was published extensively, nationally and internationally.

After completing an M.A. in Creative Writing, I turned to full length fiction and have now written four novels with a fifth close to completion. My novels are character driven – their genre is book group/commercial/literary crossover with themes of the complexities of family life, relationships and the influence of the past upon present lives. Set in the latter years of the 20th century and the opening decade of the 21st, each novel is a standalone story.

My fifth novel is something of a departure for me: set in London during WW2 with themes of conscientious objection as well as duty and familial obligation, it is my first venture into what can be considered historic fiction.

In addition to writing, I run creative writing classes and workshops and enjoy speaking to a wide range of societies and groups about my creative process and my long writing career.

Norman George was born in Bangor, Northern Ireland, where he grew up during the height of the troubles. Although he is a retired IT network manager, his real passion is for natural sciences, having studied Genetics and Cell Biology, Geosciences and Astronomy at Manchester and Open Universities.

He spent over 20 years living on mainland Europe, and spent several years hosting a ski chalet, where he became chef, driver, tourist guide and barman. His fascination for natural sciences, complemented by observation of humanity’s cultural conflicts, terrorism and the impact of mankind on nature, inspired his first novel.

‘Who Writes the Rules?’ published in 2023 presents scientific ideas and the author’s concerns about the impact of human activity. The story of Mosse and Heelia’s relationship examines how of cultural differences conflicts with their instincts, while providing a vehicle for discussing natural science within the context of the plot.

Norman’s 2nd novel, ‘Divine Intervention’, was inspired by visits to Athens and Delos, where the temples to the Greek gods are now in ruins. How would Athena react if she saw the horde of tourists surrounding the Parthenon?

A 3rd thought-provoking book is currently being researched, to be published in 2027.

Deborah Taylor, The Blue Pencil, is a freelance copy editor and proofreader based in Newbury, Berkshire. A member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, she specialises in working with indie authors and small publishers across crime, memoir, and romance genres.

With a background rooted in the print industry, Deborah brings warmth, expertise, and a genuine love of language to everything she does. She supports self-publishing authors, combining meticulous attention to detail with a warm, encouraging approach—because great editing should feel like a collaboration.

Linda Newbery writes for both adults and younger readers. Her latest novel for adults, The One True Thing, was inspired by Oxfordshire Artweeks. She won a Costa category prize with her young adult novel Set in Stone and has twice been shortlisted for the prestigious Carnegie Medal. With friends Adele Geras and Celia Rees, Linda hosts the literary blog Writers Review.

Tom is the author of fifteen books of fantasy, SF and historical fiction – including the Twilight Reign series, The God Fragments and his latest series, The Devil Diaries. After a degree in International Relations he went straight into publishing where he still works. He never received the memo about suitable jobs for writers and consequently has never been a kitchen-hand, hospital porter, pigeon hunter, or secret agent. He lives in Oxford, isn’t one of those authors who gives a damn about the history of the font used in his books and only believes in forms of exercise that allow him to hit something.

Geoffrey was born in East London in 1948 and grew up with his parents and two brothers in Winchmore Hill. He attended St Pauls C of E Primary School and, having failed his 11+, moved on to Winchmore Secondary Modern School. Here he studied for his O and A Level GCEs before taking up a place at City University to read Civil Engineering. A career with Consulting Engineers, Contractors but primarily Local Government served him well and now retired he lives with his wife in Buckinghamshire.

I’ve written more than a few books, but writing about myself might be the hardest thing of all. Let’s start simply. I was born in Jamaica. No, I can’t run or sing, and if I tried, it wouldn’t be pretty.

My love of books began as soon as I could read on my own and discovered the power of stories. Surprisingly, it was my father who taught me to read, despite being dyslexic himself. He taught himself using newspapers and abandoned catalogues from the resorts where he worked as a carpenter. That’s where my love of words began.

As a teenager, I turned to reading to escape the emotional upheaval of my parents’ breakup. Writing soon followed, becoming a way to say the things I couldn’t speak aloud. I’m naturally shy, and writing became my voice.

For years, writing stayed a hobby. That changed when I returned to university to study English Literature and finally began taking my work seriously. Over the last two years, I’ve written and self-published around fourteen novels and novellas.

I write romance because happy endings gave me hope during difficult times, and I want to pass that feeling on. I write science fiction because, as a lifelong Trekkie and a Black woman, I rarely saw myself in the worlds I loved, so I created my own. I write around real life with a husband, two boys, work, and the PTA, usually at night when it’s quiet. And if I ever met an alien, I’d run. Jamaican style.

If you love heart, humour, romance, and a touch of sci‑fi chaos, I hope you’ll try one of my stories.

nü editions is a uk-based independent publisher that aims to introduce original, innovative poetical works that provoke thinking, through bilingual productions.

EnvelopeBooks is built on a simple idea: that books are letters from a writer to a reader. With that in mind, we look for works of fiction and non-fiction that had to be written and have to be read. Our covers reinforce the metaphor. Designed as envelopes, they use subtle postal motifs as graphic clues to the content of each book. Now read one. Or write one.

Steve has spent his life trying to discover the secret of how to become a fully-functioning adult. He has so far failed. One thing he has learnt is that he ought to have tried writing a book forty years earlier than he did, although he also now realises that he should have become a celebrity first, as this would have made selling it much easier.

He currently has three comedy spy thrillers to his name, all published by Claret Press: A Very Important Teapot, set in Australia; Bored to Death in the Baltics, not set in Australia; and Poor Table Manners, which takes place in Cape Town. These feature an initially fairly hapless hero, Dawson, and a considerably less hapless heroine, Lucy, together with varied supporting casts, most of whom are not who they claim to be.

In 2025, Steve also released into the world a comedy-murder-mystery, Lazytown, set in an eccentric Oxfordshire village. And, in a departure from comedy, a UK based thriller, False Connections, featuring ex-MI5 agent, Mel Milano, may well be out before the summer book fair. This could be the first of a new series, although Dawson and Lucy are also planning another outing at some point.

Our work draws on decades of professional storytelling, school visits, teacher training, and Reading for Pleasure expertise.

As a primary school French teacher, I couldn’t find anything written in simple French that brought what I was teaching in class together, so I started writing stories during the holidays. The boys that I taught were a tough audience to please, but they really enjoyed the stories, so I published them. That was twenty years ago. There are now 14 books in the Berthe the Witch French series, each on a different theme and, following requests from Spanish teachers, two titles have been translated into Spanish.

Berthe is a kind, green Witch with a much-loved cat that likes ice cream. Each book contains a story, a word search, a game to play, a vocabulary list and, on the French books, there is a QR code which links to the stories being read – perfect if you’re not a confident French speaker. Junior Magazine included the series in an article on the ten best resources for learning a language. The latest book in the series is ‘Berthe A Perdu Son Chat. (Un Jeu de Cache-cache.)

‘Life is serious, but is not to be lived too seriously’. Serious or humorous, my poems are always good-natured.

I write when I have something to say, and I feel I have found the right way to say it. It’s about having fun with words and meaning, using words skilfully to say things differently, and saying the familiar in unfamiliar ways.

In 2017 I self-published a collection of poetry and wit as Particles of Light, with a 2nd edition in 2025. The book has been well received and has sold well in my local bookshops.

Intersecting Lines, my second collection, was traditionally published by indie publisher Beercott Books in 2021. In 2025 Beercott Books published my third collection, titled Reflections. These two collections continue to reflect my interest in people, love, the natural world, and the human condition.

In 2025 I also compiled together the sections of wit from my 3 collections and published it as Wit ‘n Word. There are poems to move you, to surprise you, and to make you laugh. The humorous poems and one-liners are there for entertainment, to be enjoyed, though they often contain a ‘sting in the tail’. I hope readers will enjoy reading my poems and will feel I am putting their own experiences and emotions into words.

I read regularly at poetry ‘open mics’ and at local literary events, and I give talks about my poetry to community groups.

Dice Comics is founded by Charles Cutting & Norm Chung.

Charles Cutting has been a professional artist for over 20 years. his work in comics has been published by the open university and various small presses. his latest graphic novel is the fiery crown. Recently, in 2026 he released a 10th anniversary edition of KADATH: The dream quest of Randolph Carter.

Norm Chung is an illustrator and artist painting in traditional media before working for several years in the games industry. In 2014 he won the Lakes international comic arts festival undiscovered talent competition and has since worked with other writers to produce graphic novels and Children’s picture books. He collaborated with writer Matthew Hllsdon to create the Graphic Novel ALIDOR: The Forbidden Friend, which will be released June 2026.

DICE COMICS is a collective that offers you a brand name to self publish your work under. We can also offer a free ISBN (if available) should you choose to self publish your completed work under the dice comics imprint. dice comics is not currently open to submissions but we hope to be soon. We publish entertainment titles aimed at all ages.

I am proud to have published six books for 8-12 year old children, all set on the mysterious Island of Animaux. The island is located somewhere at the very edge of the world, although it has yet to be discovered. It is full of the strangest creatures having unending crazy, mad, funny adventures.

All the books have received wonderful reviews. The latest one is ‘Who’s There?” and as usual it contains five tales, the first following on from the last in the previous book, “The Other Side”.

In the new tales, Aubrey the Turkey is once again the centre of attention, with strong support from Clifford Platypus and Walli Hog. See how they go on an amazing journey, to help ten-year-old Daisy return to the real world. Watch Aubrey lose all his money to a sly fox and Douglas Duck almost become a shark’s snack. And delight as Aubrey, Clifford and Walli save their new friends’ business, much to Rick Rat’s annoyance.

Sinoist Books is a UK-based independent press that publishes only the best in translated Chinese literature and contemporary fiction.

Our mission is to act as a bridge between the Chinese and English-speaking worlds, so that the best Sinophone authors and their works can transcend the language barrier.

WarmPorch Publishing is a very small, independent, labour of love.

In one form or another, I have been involved in publishing for almost twenty-five years, from setting up an independent music magazine (Sandman Magazine) in Sheffield to my current work at Oxford University Press.

WarmPorch was initially created to publish some extracts from my grandmother’s journals, The Search for Freeland Gardens [2009]. This small book (also now our first ebook) covered the arrival of my family, 50 years previously, to open a nursery garden in a small West Oxfordshire village.

In recent years I have been working with the sculptor Steve Hurst, using his diaries and sketchbooks to tell the story of the young artist. In 2022, Drawn From Life: The Ruskin Diaries 1949-53, was the first full length WarmPorch book and this year we published the follow-up, Bluff Road: The Malaya Diaries 1953-1955, covering Steve’s experiences as a national serviceman during the Malayan Emergency.

Looking further ahead, my grandmother wrote her journals between 1931 and 1974, and they track the author’s life from a shy teenager about to embark on her nursing training during the early years of the Depression, to the older, hardy, market gardener contemplating retirement. Ideally I’d like to publish three volumes of these journals. The entire text has been transcribed (about 1.3 million words); the next task is to edit them down.

Walton Street Writers is a writing group founded by Sara Banerji. We meet regularly to share our writing, and thoughts on life, americanos and flat whites. We aim to be helpful to each other, and offer observations in an open and uncritical way. We have published several anthologies including Tales from a Bookshop, Tales from a Café, and most recently, Côte Tales (2024) which you can find on Amazon.

Several members have published novels, memoirs and poetry, and collections of their own stories.

I hope to display 3 books this time, one a personal account of living in and visiting Japan entitled ‘An Affair with a Village — the work of social anthropological fieldwork and the long-term relationships built up’. The other two are novels: the first the tale of a 1960s escapee from the expectation that a girl, even with a degree, should quickly settle down, marry and have children.

The book, ‘Sharing Worlds’, recounts the exciting life she discovers between Mexico and Scotland, a fascinating job she finds, but still the conflict with wanting eventually to fulfil that expectation.

The second novel, to be launched at the Fair, is a sequel, and recounts the peripatetic life of a young woman whose travels and troubles are symbolised by the book’s title, ‘Born at Sea’. Set in the last three decades of the 20th century, it touches on cultural conflicts, the (recovering) plight of indigenous languages, and the early days of Climate Change, all presented through the eyes of a girl growing up. Spolier alert/ promise: both novels draw on some of my own experience as a social anthropologist, but the second is an entirely invented story.
